They are encouraged to participate in a range of activities within the school that will further extend their learning. These students may also participate in SHIP co-curricular activities.
We aim to develop girls' skills so that they become independent, self motivated learners who can achieve excellence in a range of areas. Students in Years 11 and 12 have dedicated study rooms and timetabled study lessons with a view to developing independent study skills and responsiblility for their own learning. Care Group Teachers, Year Level Managers and Student Counsellors are available to provide extra support for students experiencing difficulties in the management of their workload. Additional Mathematics and Science tuition is available to students every lunchtime.
Students from Non-English Speaking Backgrounds
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are available to Year 8-12 students who meet the criteria for selection into this subject.
Care Group Program
Our Care Group programs are carefully designed to meet the needs of girls at each year level. We focus on issues such as collaboration, friendships, bullying, harassment, cyber safety, rights and responsibilities, citizenship, well-being, study skills, driver safety, goal setting, the world of work, future options, course counselling, etc. Students are also provided with year level activities such as camps, excursions, reflection days and community service days. Our programs are reviewed regularly.
Students with Special Needs
Our procedures are aimed at the integration of all students into a mainstream setting. Negotiated Education Plans are developed to assist students with disabilities which may affect their learning. Support staff are available to assist students with learning needs and teachers cater for students with a range of abilities in the classroom.
Students are involved regularly in speaking and performing at whole school, year level and special purpose assemblies that further support the development of confidence and communication skills.
Mitcham has a strong academic focus and a record of achievement that is consistently above the state average. Each girl is supported to reach her full potential.
Our aim is for all girls to develop into confident, independent young women who can work cooperatively, think for themselves, take on leadership roles, make informed decisions and, ultimately, become responsible, global citizens.
Each year, Middle School Students perform well above average in the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests.
The Year 12 students also achieve outstanding results each year. In 2008, for example, 95% of students achieved their SACE and 85% of applicants received an offer from Universities or TAFE.
